An Artist's Prayer
By Julia Cameron
O Great Creator,
We are gathered together in your name
That we may be of greater service to you
And to our fellows.
We offer ourselves to you as instruments.
We open ourselves to your creativity in our lives.
We surrender to you our old ideas.
We welcome your new and more expansive ideas.
We trust that you will lead us.
We trust that it is safe to follow you.
We know you created us and that creativity
Is your nature and our own.
We ask you to unfold our lives
According to your plan, not our low self-worth.
Help us to believe that it is not too late
And that we are not too small or too flawed
To be healed -
By you and through each other - and made whole.
Help us to love one another,
To nurture each other's unfolding,
To encourage each other's growth,
And understand each other's fears.
Help us to know that we are not alone,
That we are loved and lovable.
Help us to create as an act of worship to you.
(from the book "The Complete
Artist's way. Creativity as a Spiritual Practice")

That disposition to contemplate is love. Without contemplation, love remains blind. The ultimate meaning of the active life is to make possible the happiness of contemplation.

The purpose of meditation is to lead you to contemplation.

In the act of contemplation, you are beyond desire and loathing,
arrested in the radiant truth of the mysterious.

Contemplation means "to admire something and think about it."

What we plant in the soil of contemplation, we shall reap in the harvest of action.

Christine Valters Paintner's new book "The Artist's Rule: Nurturing Your Creative Soul with Monastic Wisdom" invites readers onto the path of the "inner monk" and the "inner artist" by offering practices for deepening both their spiritual and creative lives.

I believe that we all have a longing to make meaning of our lives, to create something that expresses our own deep longing and vision. The monk within is our inner longing for contemplative presence and spaciousness, the hunger we each have to discover the holy in each moment. The artist within is our inner desire for creative expression, to give form to our deeply felt experience, and to make things of beauty.

Creativity heals when it is witnessed and affirmed by a community.
